Kenneth Branagh writes and directs this coming-of-age comedy drama centred on a working-class family in 1960s Belfast. Nine-year-old Buddy (Jude Hill) grows up in a crowded council house which he shares with his loving family: Ma (Caitriona Balfe), Pa (Jamie Dornan), who frequently travels to England for work, Granny (Judi Dench) and Pop (Ciarán Hinds). As violence engulfs the city, the Protestant family considers leaving their home in Belfast for the safety of England. Meanwhile, Buddy seeks the advice of his Pop to win the affections of a Catholic classmate before finding trouble with local girl Moira (Lara McDonnell).
