The Vinyl Word on... Aha Shake, Heartbreak
In 2011 a friend of mine called me up to tell me she had two tickets to see Kings of Leon in Slane castle later that day! Instead of bringing a friend, 17 year old me brought my mam! (I know - how wild of me) and what a memorable experience it was to hear 80,000 people covered in mud belt out ‘Sex On Fire’.
While everyone else my age was on a Drake or My Chemical Romance buzz, Kings Of Leon was where my love lay! I choose ‘Aha shake, Heartbreak’ as one of my top albums! I definitely feel it’s the underdog of all Kings of Leon albums. ‘The Bucket’ is one of them songs I blare doing my Sunday morning clean! I recently took a road trip through the country roads of Cavan with a friend who went on to tell me the lyrics “I’ll be the one to show you the way, you’ll be the one to always complain” from the song reminded him of me. In my defence the roads are bumpy and I get car sick! So I’ve no clue what he meant by that!!
If you haven’t seen the 2011 ‘rockumentary’ “Talihina Sky” and you’re a fan of KOL get on it! You won't be sorry, the documentary follows the band giving an up close and personal insight into the bands background and lifestyle. It also gives fans further insight into the understanding of their music speaking about battles addictions, religion, rebellion and like all great bands the fights that go on behind the scenes!
Many KOL fans will argue Only By Night is the best album, I would agree to extent that, that album definitely soared them to success but the gritty rock feel of Aha, Shake Heartbreak is a personal fave featuring the original KOL sound with deep bass lines and Caleb’s unique voice. Soft and Milk are two other songs that I love! Milk has a catchy repetitive bassline which steals the show. Throw on ‘Four Kicks’ for a great head banging tune or blare it in the car for that imaginary car chase scene in your mind!
