Our take on... Avengers: Infinity War

Ten years, eighteen movies, six Infinity Stones, and one Infinity Gauntlet have brought us here: the film that Marvel have dubbed the most ambitious crossover in movie history, “Avengers: Infinity War”. The only question is does the film live up to expectations? Of course it does, not only that but it surpasses them easily...

Our take on... Rampage

The story starts with an accident aboard a space station which inadvertently causes the work being done there to land on earth, infecting George and two other animals that go on a, well, rampage...

Our take on... Pacific Rim: Uprising

This was an absolute breeze to watch as it cracks along at a great pace and is massively helped by the charisma of the leads, especially Boyega and Spaey. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable monster/robot smash ‘em up that trades in the deeper elements of Del Toro’s original for thrills, laughs, and more citywide destruction than you can shake a giant robot fist at...

Our take on... A Quiet Place

The title of this film works on a number of levels. It describes how the characters live their lives, it describes what America, has become in the world of the film, and it also describes the best way to watch the film. Turn off the lights, turn down your phone, and immerse yourself in this brilliantly made thriller from first time director, co-writer, and star John Krasinski (“The Office”) that also stars his real-life wife, Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train”) and a couple of excellent young actors as their on-screen kids...

Our take on... Ready Payer One

“Ready Player One” is set in the far flung future and features a heavy dose of fully CGI characters and environments, and is set in both the real world and the virtual world of “The Oasis”. If you can imagine a version of “The Matrix” except entry to The Oasis is voluntary!...

Our take on... Mary Magdalene

This is a beautifully shot and scored film that doesn’t grandstand in the way religious films have in the past. The big events are portrayed in a very low key manner that works for the film, and the performances are very subtle, particularly the two leads. It’s a film that has the potential to move you, remove the pre-conceived notions of Mary Magdalene, and is one you could be thinking about for some time after watching it.

Our take on... Red Sparrow

Having worked together on three of the four “Hunger Games” films, director Frances Lawrence reunites with star Jennifer Lawrence for this adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jason Matthews. What we get here from the two is a very well shot, but at times tough to watch, espionage thriller which provides Jennifer Lawrence with her best performance since “Winter’s Bone” in 2010...

Our take on... Tombraider

This film is a total reboot of the film series, so put the Angelina Jolie version out of your mind. This version of Lara Croft isn’t the Bruce Wayne/Indiana Jones with a posh British accent that the character has become synonymous with since the first game was released in the mid 90s. Instead when we first meet Lara, she has foregone her family fortune and is working as a cycling courier in London...

Who is TALOS?

Upon its original release overseas in April 2017, Wild Alee was hailed as “a spectacularly assured debut" (The Irish Times), while The Independent called it “stunning,” and The Line Of Best Fit raved that the music “will leave your hairs standing on end.”...

Our Take on... 3 Billboards

If you’re familiar with Martin McDonagh’s previous work like “In Bruges” and “Seven Psychopaths” you’ll probably have a good idea of the kind of dark humour and explosions of sporadic violence to expect in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”...

Our Take on... The Greatest Showman

The film is loosely based on the life of PT Barnum, one half of the founders of the Barnum and Bailey circus which ran from 1871 to 2017. Hugh Jackman stars as Barnum and he’s absolutely perfect for the role. If you’re expecting the same type of performance that he gave in “Les Miserables” you can think again...

American Utopia

American Utopia is David Byrne's eleventh studio album and his first solo album since 2004's Going Backwards fourteen years ago. Although this isn't to say he hasn't been busy in the mean time...
