2016 is the 100 year anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin's GPO. This collection contains one of the most comprehensive catalogue of Irish rebel songs and speeches. Throughout the history of Ireland's struggle to end British rule many songs were composed and sung in order to relay specific historical events. Many of these songs were handed down in the oral tradition to promote the cause and further the political philosophy of Irish Republicanism based upon the ideals of the French Revolution and an independent sovereign state. The leaders of the 1916 Rising declared an independent Irish state as Padraig Pearse read out The Proclamation of the Irish Republic on the steps of the GPO in Sackville Street, now known as O'Connell Street. While Pearse read the Proclamation, James Connelly, Tom Clarke, Seán MacDermott, Joseph Plunkett, Éamonn Ceannt and Thomas MacDonagh prepared to do battle with the Crown Forces that had occupied Ireland for over 800 years. This rebellion resulted in the brutal execution of the leaders that lead the massive public outcry and the formation of an Irish Republic. This CD is a collection of Irish rebel songs that span the history of Ireland from the 1798 rebellion to the present day.
