A Deep Dive into 'I Like It When You Sleep' by The 1975
So yeah, The 1975 have been circulating the internet for the last few months & rightly so. I can’t scroll on Tiktok for 5 minutes without a video of Matty Healy & considering they're playing in St Annes park this evening, guess what that means? We are diving into the groovy and dreamy world of The 1975's second studio album, (one of my favs) "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It."
It's just so longggggg...
Now, before we get into the nitty-gritty, can we just take a moment to appreciate that mouthful of a title? I mean, seriously, talk about always wanting to be the centre of attention! Let's all collectively agree that The 1975 is a band with a liking for creating confusingly long album titles. Like sorry, but sometimes I can’t remember them & end up saying something like ‘ah you know that one with the really long title..’ but hey, it's all part of their charm, right? Who needs short and snappy title when you can have a mouthful of words to mumble along to?
Now, onto the tunes! "I Like It When You Sleep..." is a musical journey that takes you from one sonic landscape to another; kinda like riding a roller coaster blindfolded while eating your favourite sweets. You'll be grooving to funky beats, basking in atmospheric synths, and getting lost in frontman Matty Healy's mesmerizing vocals. It's a bit like floating through a technicolor dream, and you won't want to wake up. This album has some of the band’s most 80’s style tracks drenched in the reminiscence of some of our fav’s from that era. One of the standout tracks that shows just how 80’s this album is, is "Love Me." It's like the band took a time machine back to the '80s, threw on some shoulder pads, and decided to dance their hearts out like Rick Astley in ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’
"It's not about reciprocation it's just all about me...."
And then there’s ‘The Sound’ – I don’t know what this song is laced with but god damn, I just can’t get enough of it. It’s an infectious and vibrant song, with a chorus that will remain in your brain until the day you die. After release it quickly became one of their signature tracks, cliché for some, but has & forever will be one of my favourite 1975 songs. It delves into themes of self-doubt and the pressures of expectations from society, offering a relatable message wrapped in an irresistibly danceable package. (don’t @ me)
I'm not crying, you're crying...
But wait, there's more! "Somebody Else" is the kind of song you listen to when you're feeling a little heartbroken and in need of a good cry. Matty's soulful delivery combined with the melancholic lyrics will hit you right in the feels. It's like getting dumped by your imaginary partner, and you'll find yourself singing along, pretending that you too have been through a tragic breakup. We've all been there, pal, you’ll be alright!
The one & only...
Matty Healy. Not only has he captivated our hearts worldwide with his voice, lyrics, and charisma on stage but recently, he has become a quite the Tiktok sensation, winning over the hearts of millions of people from videos of all of the above who would never have considered themselves as fans of The 1975. I won’t lie, I was victim to this! Not to say, I wasn’t a fan of The 1975 prior to them blowing up on Tiktok, but it did however remind of how effin’ great they are, & intriguingly beautiful Matty Healy is.
All in all, "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It" is a delightful kaleidoscope of sounds and emotions. It's an album that makes you want to dance, cry, and belt out the lyrics like there's no tomorrow.
